August TBR

It’s a new month, and a new start to my reading goals. Here’s hoping this month goes better than the last one did. (It probably won’t, though, because I go back to school on the 20^th.) Here are all the books I’m hoping to read during this last month of summer.

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

The movie adaptation of this book is coming out soon here in the US (literally in 3 days, on the 3^rd). I’m sort of interested in seeing it, but everyone knows you have to read the book before you see the movie. Ideally, I would like to get this book done before the third, but I’m in the middle of another book right now, so I don’t think that’s going to happen. I will do my best, though. Maybe I can read two books in the first 3 days of the month. Wouldn’t that be cool?

Anyway, I really don’t know much about this book. I know it’s about kids who have powers after some kind of plague happened, and they get taken away from their parents. I know a lot of people like it. That’s pretty much it, though. I know, great description, right?

Walk on Earth a Stranger by Rae Carson

This was on my TBR last month because I had just checked it out of the library and I said I needed to read it. Well… I never did, and I ended up checking it out again and starting it at the end of July. So here we are, with it on my TBR again for a second month. This time I’m pretty sure I’ll actually read it, though, since I have already started it, and I’m liking it so far.

It’s set during the gold rush era of the United States, and our main character is a girl who has the ability to sense gold. It sounds cool and so far it is cool.

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire

I feel like at this point my monthly TBRs are really boring to you guys. I just keep repeating the same books. For example, this book was on last month’s TBR, and the next book I have on this list was on both of the previous two month’s TBRs. What can I say? I don’t like to mix it up.

Anyway, this book is about what happens to kids after they come back from places like Narnia, and they have to acclimate to the real world again. It’s a really short book, it sounds really interesting, and I just need to read it already. So I will. Hopefully.

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

I tried listening to the audiobook of this last month, and I didn’t really like the narrator, so I had trouble getting into it. Now I’ve rented a copy from the library (famous last words), and I’m going to try to read the physical book and see if that works out better. I’ve heard that the trilogy gets better as you go along, so I really want to finally read this first book so I can read the rest.

It’s set in a world that sounds awesome. There are four parallel Londons: Red London, Grey London, White London, and Black London, but Black London was destroyed long ago and nobody talks about it anymore. Red London is a flourishing magical kingdom, White London is corrupt, but it also has magic. Grey London is like our own, having no magic at all. The main character Kell has the rare ability to travel between these Londons, so he acts as an ambassador between the royals of each London. On the side, he also does some smuggling, and apparently in this book, that gets him into some trouble. It sounds like something I would love if I ever got around to reading it.
