5 Popular Book Series I Haven’t Read (And Don’t Plan To)

Hey guys! Here I am with another post. This was supposed to go up yesterday, but I just couldn’t get it up on time. I’m sorry I haven’t been super active on, well, anything, but life is crazy right now and I’m struggling a bit with keeping up with everything.

Anyway, today’s post is one of those ones that you could call “controversial.” I’m going to be talking about 5 super-popular series that I either haven’t started and don’t intend to or I have started and don’t intend to continue. As a disclaimer, if I include one of your favorite series in this list, I’m sorry. It’s not an attack on you, and if you loved it, that’s great. I just don’t think that, knowing what kinds of books I like, I will enjoy it.

So now that that’s out of the way, let’s get into the list.

1. Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas

I know, I’m already starting in a bad place for a lot of you. This is one of those series that everyone in the world seems to be obsessed with. I have read the first book of this series in its entirety, though it took me two tries before I was finally able to do so. If that doesn’t tell you anything, I didn’t like it much.

And I know, everyone says that the first book isn’t as good as the rest of the series, and you need to keep going for it to get better, but the truth is that I just didn’t care about the characters. The world is interesting, and you guys know I love fantasy, but there are so many incredible fantasy books out there that I could read and love more than I think I will love this one.

With that being said, this is one of the series on this list that I’m not really firm on my decision not to read it yet. If you love this series and you really think I would love it, too, feel free to leave some reasons you think that down in the comments, and maybe I’ll change my mind. Right now, though, it’s a no.

2. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer series by Michelle Hodkin

I don’t really know anything about this series other than that it’s by Michelle Hodkin and it’s got an unreliable narrator who, I’m assuming, is named Mara Dyer. I also know that apparently a companion book to this series came out relatively recently that followed a boy who I presume was the love interest in the original series. I have never even touched one of the books in this series, but it sounds like it’s weird, which I would normally like, but also creepy, which I don’t like.

3. Anything in Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter universe

This one is another super controversial one. I know that a lot of people love the books set in this world, and that they can be very very protective of it if you try to bad mouth it. I respect that. I have books that I’ll defend at all costs, too.

The main problem with these books, for me, is that I just don’t like angel books in general. It’s why I didn’t ever finish the Fallen series by Lauren Kate, it’s why I don’t want to read the Hush, Hush series by Becca Fitzpatrick (I could include that series on here too but I don’t want to be too repetitive). I’ve tried reading them—they just don’t work for me.

Plus, at this point this world includes three different books series and maybe more coming out in the future. That’s a lot of commitment, and I don’t want to make that kind of commitment unless I’m sure I’ll love it.

I did try to read from this world. I read the entirety of the first two books of the Mortal Instruments series, and then I just couldn’t read anymore. It also didn’t help that I didn’t really like/care about any of the characters.

4. The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo

I’m getting very good at making enemies now, aren’t I? I read some of the first book of this series a long time ago. I might have finished it— I don’t remember. I don’t remember much about this book at all, actually, except that I wasn’t really interested in it. It’s been so long that at this point, if I wanted to read the rest of the series, I would have to reread the first book, and frankly, I’m not interested enough to do that.

This is another series that I’m not completely sure I don’t want to finish it, so like I said with Throne of Glass, if you think I should read it, feel free to let me know why down in the comments and maybe I’ll add it back to my TBR. Who knows?

5. The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead

I will admit it: I went through a Twilight faze. I read all the books, and watched all the movies, back when I was in middle school, and as such was probably way too young to be reading that kind of stuff. But read it I did. And I liked it, too. I liked it so much, in fact, that, along with Percy Jackson and Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Twilight played a huge part in turning me into the reader I am today. I’m sure if I had read this series back during that time of my life, I would have loved it, but these days I’m not interested in vampire stories.

I’m sure this series is nothing like Twilight, and I’m sure it’s very good. I’m just not personally interested in it. That’s all.

That’s all that I had for this post today! Again, sorry it came out so late.

Thanks for reading, you guys! Before you go, think about hopping down in the comments and letting me know what popular books and/or series you don’t plan on reading. I’d love to hear them.

See you on Tuesday!

  1. The Grisha Trilogy wasn’t bad, but I’d say it’s safe to skip. The love interest most people love doesn’t get any wins in the end, but I didn’t care for him as much as others.
