5 Popular Book Series I Haven’t Read (And Need To Get To ASAP)

Hey guys! Today’s post is sort of a continuation of Friday’s, except this time, instead of talking about series I am not planning on reading, I will be talking about popular book series that I haven’t completed (or in some cases, started) that I really, really need/want to get to, but for whatever reason, I haven’t yet. This is your opportunity to chew me out – er, give me some kind encouragement to read these books. I look forward to those encouraging words.

The rules for the books on this list is that they have to be series where all of the books are already out, and therefore, it is possible for me to complete said series. Even with that stipulation, there are still a ton of popular series that could go on this list (and don’t even get me started on standalone books). If you guys would be interested in seeing more posts like this one, or Friday’s, let me know down in the comments. Because really, it’s sort of sad how many popular book series I haven’t read, or even started. If I listed them all, we’d be here for a really long time, so for now, I’m just going with 5.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien

I don’t know if this one really counts as a “series,” since from what I know, it was originally published as a single book (and actually the edition I have is like that, with all three books in one volume), but people tend to refer to it as a series, so that’s what I’m going with.

I know The Lord of the Rings is basically the fantasy series. It’s essentially the thing that started it all, and inspired countless modern writers to do what they’re doing today. I know all that, and I know I should read it, and I would, and I am. I’m just scared. Not because it’s long, necessarily, but because a while ago, several years ago at this point, actually, my friend made me read The Hobbit, which is a really short book that, apparently, is supposed to be an easier, more digestible read than The Lord of the Rings, because it’s a children’s book. And I didn’t really like it. It was really confusing and long-winded, and I didn’t totally understand what was going on half the time. It was okay, but it wasn’t my favorite by any means.

If I felt that way about a book that was supposed to be a children’s book, then I can’t imagine how much more confusing reading The Lord of the Rings will be for me. I do want to try someday, though, because, well… it’s Tolkien. I feel like I can’t rightfully call myself a fantasy fan until I have read his books.

The Anna and the French Kiss companion trilogy by Stephanie Perkins

I have no idea what the official name for this collection of companion books is, if it even has one, but I hear about it all the time. If you’ve been here for any amount of time, you guys know that I’m not usually a huge fan of contemporary novels, but these ones, and in particular the first one, Anna and the French Kiss, hold a special draw for me.

You see, the first book is set in France. Something you guys may not know about me is that I love French. One of my majors in university is French, I’ve been taking French classes since the first time they were offered to me back in 7^th grade, and I’m even planning on studying abroad in France starting in January. If there is a book out there that is related to France in some way, you can pretty much guarantee that I will want that book, almost regardless of what it’s about.

So yeah. Anna and the French Kiss. I want it. And since I want to read that one, if I end up liking it, I figure I might as well read the other two books in the companion series.

 The Darkest Minds series by Alexandra Bracken

I know. I’ve already talked about this book a lot (like in almost every monthly TBR since I started this blog, oops), so I’m not going to go into too much detail about it here. But basically, I have been meaning to read this book for a really long time, and I’ve heard a lot of people say that it’s great. It sounds like something I would really enjoy, but I just have so many other things I have to do and so many other books that I want or need to read before I get to this one. I don’t know when I’ll have time to read it, but I’ll hopefully get around to it eventually.

The Raven Cycle Quartet by Maggie Stiefvater

I don’t really have any idea what this series is about other than that the main character’s name is Blue and there’s some magical stuff going on. I also know that everyone seems to love this series, including someone who usually hates fantasy books, so surely that means I, as someone who loves fantasy, am bound to love it, too. Either way, I want to try it.

The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

As you guys know if you’ve been here for a while, until this year, I had never read a single Harry Potter book. I watched all the movies and own all the books because my mom is a major Harry Potter fan, but I’d never read them. Now, that has changed—I’ve read the first one. But I still need to get to the rest, and I know that if I don’t do it soon I might not ever get around to it.

Harry Potter is such an important part of so many people’s lives. I feel sort of left out for not being in on all the hype, and I want to change that. Hopefully soon, but who knows how likely that is to happen? I guess we’ll see.
